A CRICKET club which has closed after 125 years is planning an end of era party.

And they’re looking for former players to join them for a reunion.

Badger Hill Cricket Club, based in Rastrick, closed last month to pave the way for 780 new homes to be built on the land they leased.

Thornhill Estates own the Dewsbury Road land, which has development potential.

Peter Hepworth, treasurer of the club, said: “We always have an end of year party, but this year we’ll have an end of era party.”

The club started life as the New Road Cricket Club, linked to the nearby New Road Methodist Church, and became Badger Hill Cricket Club within the last two decades.

The club would need to invest money in facilities which would not be cost effective with three years left to run on their lease.

With a requirement of 12 months’ notice, they decided to call it a day, especially as the land was earmarked for future development.

Now Thornhill Estates, which owns a large part of Grimescar Valley, have appointed an agent to run the development project.

Peter added: “We’ll all have to look for new clubs at the start of next season, but first we’re planning an end of an era and we wanted to invite former players and members back for one last send off.”

The Rastrick club was a member of the Arrow Self Drive Huddersfield Central League.

The event takes place at the Sun Inn at Rastrick on Saturday, November 3 at 7.30pm.
