HISTORIC buildings in Huddersfield could be turned into housing.

It’s part of an initiative to breathe new life into the town centre.

Councillors will decide next week whether to approve the multi-million pound plan which could bring town centre landmarks back into use.

Officials have drawn up a list of 10 buildings in Huddersfield and Dewsbury which could qualify for the £2.88m Clusters of Empty Homes fund.

In Huddersfield, the plan includes:

Setting up six flats in the Waverley Chambers building on Kirkgate.

Establishing 11 apartments in the Estate Buildings on Railway Street.

Converting Longroyd Cottages on Longroyd Lane into four homes.

Setting up 12 flats at Spring Lodge, Wood- thorpe Terrace, Longroyd Bridge.

Turning 6 Railway Street into 19 apartments.

Converting 14 Chancery Lane into 28 flats.

The proposals for Dewsbury include:

Setting up four apartments in the rear annex of Pioneer House.

Converting the old Co-op funeral parlour on Northgate into six flats.

Turning Field House, Wellington Road into 25 apartments.

Establishing 10 flats at the Auction Rooms, School Street.

The 125 new housing units would be a mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom.

But a Kirklees Council document explains that the list is “not intended to be definitive.”

The report says: “As part of the bid to secure the funding an illustrative list of schemes with the potential to access Empty Clusters funding was prepared.

“The focus in the bid was on key strategic buildings within the town centres that represent important economic and heritage development opportunities that will not come forward without assistance.

“It is likely that the final list of properties selected to receive assistance are a combination of some of those on the illustrative list and additional properties not identified at the time of the bid submission.”

The council’s Labour Cabinet will decide next week whether to approve the plan at its meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall from 4pm on Tuesday.

Twenty councils will share the £60m of Government funding to set up 3,631 housing units.
