A HOLMFIRTH farmer is urging dog owners to keep their pets on leads on a public footpath after a sheep was badly savaged.

The attack happened near the Rising Sun Farm at Cartworth Moor on Monday night.

Farmers Kelly and Darren Lees were alerted by neighbours after the incident occurred in a nearby field off Rotcher Road.

Kelly, 31, said:“I have heard a woman was walking her dogs and they were chasing the sheep round and round.

“The one which was savaged had its leg ripped open.

“It also had its windpipe damaged so we have had to have it destroyed.”

She said they had a similar incident a month ago at their other premises in Hade Edge.

Darren, 39, added: “That sheep had been in distress all night and someone has known that and left it.

“The countryside is for everyone to enjoy.

“I am not saying it is just for farmers, but this our livelihood.

“It is also disgusting to leave animals in distress.”

The Lees, who have owned the farm at Cartworth Moor for 10 years, have reported the incident to police.
