Locations used in Marsden include the Royal British Legion Social Club, Marsden Liberal Club, Dirker Avenue and the basketball court in Dirker Bank Road.

Jenny Brown, a spokesman for the BBC, said the drama promised to cause a real stir.

“It’s a captivating script which pushes the genre into uncharted territory, she said.

“Marsden was chosen because of its beautiful yet stark rural setting. It was exactly what we were looking for.”

The cast is mainly young and up-and-coming but features two well-known faces in Ricky Tomlinson (The Royle Family) and Kenneth Cranham (Hellbound: HellRaiser II).

Directed by award-winning Jonny Campbell, the cast is led by Luke Newberry, who plays teenage zombie Kieren Walker.
