HUDDERSFIELD Anarchist League staged a protest inside the town’s Job Centre before they were moved on by police.

Around 20 demonstrators took part in the event at around 2pm on Monday.

A group spokesman said: “We were protesting against Government measures to cut people’s benefits by sanctioning people for such small errors as been late for signing on.

“This is causing much poverty and suffering. The protest was also aimed at housing benefit cuts and making the unemployed pay a proportion of their council tax which is impossible on state benefits.

“The protest was entirely peaceful. One protester made a speech and others gave out leaflets.’’

After police threatened arrests the protesters moved outside and carried on leafleting.

The spokesman added: “This is one of many such actions planned against Government attempts to make the poorest in society pay for the austerity crisis which was caused by the bankers.

“It is hypocritical of the Government that they are saying claimants should get jobs when it is the Government that is destroying jobs.’’
