HUDDERSFIELD finally has its giant festive fir.

The town centre’s Christmas tree is up at last in St George’s Square after the first one lasted less than a day.

Back in the middle of November the original 50ft tree was put up but the next morning council workers chopped it down and shredded it.

Kirklees Council said workers had noticed the tree was substandard after it went up and said a replacement was being provided free-of-charge.

The gigantic Sitka spruce cost the council £1,900 which included delivery and the hire of a crane.
