LIGHTSABERS at the ready – there are 1,243 official Jedi knights in Kirklees.

The revelation comes in the just released 2011 Census findings.

The Jedi census phenomenon was started in 2001 by people annoyed by government questions over religion.

It’s not known if the 20 druids, eight Scientologists – a religion followed by Hollywood actor Tom Cruise – and 16 people who follow witchcraft were doing the same, but they’re in the latest data.

In Calderdale 692 are classed as following the Jedi Force and 34 people follow the Heavy Metal religion.

The data shows there’s 422,458 people living in Kirklees – and there’s more women (213,801) than men (208,657). In the 2001 Census there were 388,571 people – 186,623 men and 196,430 women.

There are 323,890 white British people and the largest population thereafter is 41,802 of Asian/Asian British Pakistani and 20,797 of Asian/Asian British Indian origin.

There are a further 2,635 Irish and 158 gypsy or Irish travellers.

There are 225,751 Christian people – 53.4% of all Kirklees residents. The number is down from 261,128 in the 2001 Census.

The biggest religion thereafter is Muslim with 61,280 people (14.5%) in the Kirklees borough. In 2001 the Census says there were 39,312 Muslim people in Kirklees.

100,829 people are of no religion and 27,390 did not state a religion.

There are 181,545 ‘household spaces’ – 8,020 of them with no usual residents – and 36,923 detached properties, 59,537 semi-detached properties, 61,338 terraced and 19,039 flats.

The Census shows that 307,194 people are engaged in ‘economic activity’ – 112,199 employed full time, 44,638 employed part-time and 27,494 self-employed.

There are 14,465 unemployed people and 13,504 long-term sick or disabled. Of those unemployed, 4,398 are aged 16 to 24, and 2,392 aged 50-74.

Some 2,672 have never worked and 5,850 are classed as long-term unemployed. A further 44,027 are retired, there’s 17,593 students and 15,227 people are classed as looking after home or family.

Of those who work, 110,829 work full-time between 31 to 48 hours a week and 11,019 work more than 49 hours.

The biggest industries in Kirklees are manufacturing (28,916 employees), general wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles (33,594 employees) and education (20,326).

In Calderdale there are 203,826 people overall – an increase from 203,800 in 2001. Of those 99,627 men and 104,199 women.
