A FUNDRAISING event with a difference could raise more than £3,000 for a Huddersfield charity.

The Great Northern Sled Dog Walk over the Humber Bridge proved a big success.

More than 40 people – and even more huskies and similar breeds – took part in the five-mile fundraiser which involved crossing the Humber Bridge twice.

Organised by mum-of-two Faye Bailey, the walk is set to raise more than £3,000 for Ruddi’s Retreat.

The charity offers holidays to families with youngsters fighting cancer or other long-term illnesses.

The charity was set up by Ali Jones of Linthwaite, whose son Ruddi, pictured inset, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer as a baby.

The charity has a holiday caravan at Primrose Valley.

Faye, 36, who has a daughter Shania, 12, and a son Oliver, nine, has suffered serious health problems for many years.

Faye, of Goole, has fought back to health having had an ovarian cyst the size of a rugby ball removed.

She was friends with Ali on Facebook and was touched when she heard about Ruddi and the charity.

Faye, who until recently had 30 sled dogs and runs a popular website northernwolf.co.uk, decided to organise the walk.

The first walk was so successful Faye is planning another, at Laughton Forest in Scunthorpe on July 28, again for Ruddi’s Retreat.

So far 60 people have registered via the website.

The only requirement is that those taking part must have sled dogs only.
