HUNDREDS of drivers were caught up in traffic chaos last night.
They were subjected to long delays after problems on both carriageways of the M62 near Huddersfield.
And delays on the busy motorway meant that vehicles ground to a halt on various main roads around Huddersfield, including Bradley Road, Fixby Road and around Ainley Top as traffic backed up from the M62.
The congestion was caused by an accident on the M62 eastbound between Junction 26 at Chain Bar and Junction 27 at Gildersome.
It is not known if anyone was injured.
Meanwhile, motorists travelling in the opposite direction suffered long delays, taking an hour to travel between Junctions 31, near Normanton, and 25 at Clifton.
DRIVERS in the Huddersfield area are being warned to batten down the hatches today.
Yesterday brought winds of up to 60mph, causing dangerous conditions on all local roads over high ground and on the M62.
And more of the same is forecast for today.
Met Office forecasters, based in the Highway Agency’s National Traffic Operations Centre, are predicting a strong westerly wind with widespread gusts of 50 mph for Huddersfield. Some gusts may exceed 60 mph in Yorkshire.
