A WOMAN has told how she recognised a Lockwood postman as the man who allegedly performed sex acts in front of her when she was a schoolgirl.

The woman, who cannot be named, told a court she spotted the man she knew as John, working as a postman, four years after the alleged offences.

The prosecution maintain that man was Peter Stafford-Simpson, 47, who is standing trial for 21 sexual offences, including rape of a child. He denies all charges.

The jury sitting at Leeds Crown Court resumed hearing evidence yesterday from a woman who was 14 in 2005. Earlier in the case she told how she befriended John after he offered to buy her and a friend alcohol and cigarettes.

Defending Stafford-Simpson, Ms Gillian Batts asked whether she later saw the man she knew as John in Lockwood in 2010.

She told the court: “He was wearing postman’s clothing, he had a red jacket and red bag and he was delivering mail into the shop.”

The jury then heard evidence from another girl who was 13 in 2005 and said she met the defendant near Huddersfield market when he offered to buy her and another girl alcohol.

She also told Ms Batts when cross-examined that she too had seen John in 2010 as a postman while she was on a bus in Lockwood.

Ms Batts said she was ‘mistaken’ when identifying him to police and that man was not the defendant. But she said she was sure it was John.

She was asked about events when she first met John in Huddersfield market in 2005. She said at first she told him to go away ‘calling him a weirdo’ as they were ‘dancing and messing about’ but they later agreed and gave him her mobile number.

She then told how he bought them vodka and then asked if they wanted to smoke cannabis and led them to an alleyway.

But she told how once in the alleyway he started undoing his trousers and the girls ran off.

She said: “We both freaked out. He had his hands in his pants.”

She then told how he phoned her saying ‘he was sorry’ and ‘it was only a laugh’ and he would give them money to apologise.

She said they met him and he gave them £50.

The witness told how a week later they agreed to meet John again and he said he would give them more money.

But she said she was ‘scared’ and was ready to ring police on her phone when the three of them got a taxi to Paddock.

She told the driver to stop but John told him to ignore her saying she was drunk. She described going to an area under a bridge where John laid out bin bags and said to make themselves comfortable.

She sobbed as she recalled: “He started undoing his pants saying he would give us some money. He said he would give us £30.”

She described him performing a sex act then they ran out and left. The trial continues.
