POLICE officers who knew Jimmy Savile are to be investigated, it was confirmed this morning.

An unnamed former police inspector in West Yorkshire is to be the subject of an inquiry by the Independent Police Complaints Commission - and other inquiries could follow at six other forces.

Details of the inquiry were revealed today by West Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson.

He said the IPCC has directed West Yorkshire Police to record and refer the conduct of a former police inspector and has asked West Yorkshire Police, along with six other forces, to review all information held in relation to Jimmy Savile to ascertain the need for further involvement of the IPCC.

Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire, Mark Burns-Williamson welcomed the IPCC involvement and the independent scrutiny it will provide for West Yorkshire Police and the six other forces involved.

"It is vitally important that the people of West Yorkshire and elsewhere understand what happened and the role that the police played during the many years that Savile lived in West Yorkshire and committed such shocking crimes here and throughout the UK", said Mr Burns-Williamson
