A NEW supermarket will not benefit local businesses unless shoppers can use the store car park to visit other shops, a villager has warned.

Aldi revealed details of plans to build a 12,000 sq ft store on Britannia Road, Slaithwaite, last Friday as part of a public consultation.

Yesterday the German budget supermarket chain attempted to calm villagers’ concerns, promising free parking for motorists using the supermarket and other local business.

Aldi has said the store, which will be the second Aldi store in Colne Valley, will include 90 parking spaces, create 30 jobs and help boost trade for other businesses in Slaithwaite.

But Golcar resident James O’Flynn has raised concern about parking restrictions currently in force at Aldi, in Milnsbridge.

The Milnsbridge car park is solely for Aldi customers and motorists using it to shop at other businesses can be levied with a £70 fine.
