THE next few days will remain bitterly cold across snow-hit Huddersfield.

And Examiner weather expert Paul Stevens has warned of only a very slow thaw.

He said: "At the moment it’s just a bitterly cold week ahead with snow showers across the Pennines until Thursday and a fairly brisk easterly wind.

"In the evenings it will freeze and the compacted ice and snow can be quite dangerous for motorists.

"It will thaw throughout the week but only a very slow thaw.

"As for Easter it will remain cold and on Easter Sunday there’s a threat of strong south-easterly winds."

Schools closed across Kirklees today were: Ashbrow School, Longley School, Lydgate J and I School, Newsome High School and Sports College, Netherton Infants School, Thurstonland Endowed (VC) First School, Westfields Pupil Referral Unit, Wilberlee J and I School and Nortonthorpe Hall School.

Bus services too were affected with many Kirklees services unable to access usual routes.

A Kirklees Council spokeswoman said: "We are receiving many requests for main roads where the snow is continuing to blow from the fields and drifting.

"We are widening the routes on the main roads in rural areas and dealing with access to restore electricity supplies etc plus access to community and health centres which provide meals for vulnerable adults.

"The hand gritting teams are concentrating on doctors, health centres , schools and the long main paths linking town centres.
