A SHELLEY man was killed and two other people injured in a horror crash.

Tributes were paid last night to Rob Fielding, 24, who died in the head-on crash.

He was driving his Peugeot towards Huddersfield on the A629 High Lee Lane near Hoylandswaine when it was in collision with a grey Jaguar travelling in the opposite direction on Tuesday evening.

He sustained serious injuries in the collision and died at the scene.

A passenger in the Peugeot, a 52-year-old man from Huddersfield, was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

The driver of the Jaguar, a 49-year-old woman also from Huddersfield, was taken to hospital with chest pains, cuts and bruises.

South Yorkshire Police, fire crews and ambulance paramedics were called to the scene following the collision at 6.30pm on Tuesday.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance was also called to assist but casualties were instead taken by land ambulance to hospital.

Police closed the road for several hours.

South Yorkshire Police are now investigating the fatal crash and a road sign was assembled yesterday near the crash to urge witnesses to come forward.

The road was closed while vehicles were recovered and debris was cleared.

Mr Fielding’s mother Susan, of Shelley Woodhouse Lane, Shelley, was too upset to talk to the Examiner at this time.

The death of the popular former Shelley College student, who was a keen skateboarder, has shocked the tight-knit community which is coming to terms with the tragedy.

Mr Fielding’s best friend Jack Gardener posted on Facebook: “He was my best friend, the go-to guy, and always had my back.

“Bros forever. I miss you so much dude.”

Pal Shaun Mitchell posted: “Really upsetting hearing the news, my thoughts go out to his friends and family. He was always an awesome dude RIP Rob.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or either vehicle in the moments leading up to the crash is urged to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 923 of April 23.
