HUDDERSFIELD'S flagship George Hotel has been bought.

Dr Altaf Hussain, of Huddersfield Dental Care Centre, says he wants to renovate its interior and restore it to its original splendour.

He is known in Huddersfield for renovating property for student accommodation.

The 60-bedroom hotel was put on the market on January 2 for offers in excess of £900,000.

Dr Hussain said he was exploring ''commercial opportunities" at the hotel.

He said: "Discussions with Kirklees Council and Acumen Architects will be undertaken to explore other development possibilities.

"It is anticipated the hotel will be opened within a short timescale, whilst ensuring its long term future.

"Providing additional commercial uses within surplus and under-used accommodation will be paramount of mitigating the substantial overheads involved in running such a hotel and enable it to be upgraded."

The George was put on the market after the Royal Bank of Scotland appointed receivers.
