The full amount has just been revealed in response to an FOI (Freedom of Information) request to Kirklees Council.

The figure includes the cost of staging just the relays (£5,839) Parkfest, (£15,522), and joint costs (£34,891).

Parkfest was the Sunday evening entertainment event held at Greenhead Park after the relay through Huddersfield.

The following day, Monday, June 25, the torch travelled through Dewsbury and Batley.

The Olympic Torch relay was one of the most popular public events in the town in decades.

An estimated crowd of 40,000 queued for up to two hours to see the flame as it travelled the three miles through Marsh to the town centre, on to Fartown and up Bradford Road before heading on to Brighouse.

The relay captured the spirit of the moment with local residents not wanting to miss out on a “once in a lifetime” experience.

Young and old alike crowded up to nine deep on the pavements to cheer and clap the proud Olympic Torchbearers.

Children had faces painted with Union Jacks and the Cross of St George, while elderly residents from Abbey Place Nursing Home sat in wheelchairs swaddled in blankets and waved flags in Fartown.

At the time, Kirklees Council leader Mehboob Khan said: “It was a fantastic turnout for the torch relay.

“It has been a great family day and we are extremely proud of our local heroes.
