Stunned eye-witnesses told how it was “like something out of a Hollywood movie”.

Rescuers ran to help the stricken driver, who was still in the car as it came to rest on the opposite side of the road.

The 71-year-old, who has not been named, was treated at the scene by Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramedics and firefighters, before being taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Fire crews had to cut off the roof of the car to help him out.

The crash happened at 10am in Bradford Road, 100 yards from the Hillhouse traffic lights.

The elderly man in a white Toyota Aygo is thought to have clipped the kerb of a central reservation as he headed towards Hillhouse.

His car flew through the air and somersaulted before landing on its side on the opposite carriageway – thankfully missing oncoming vehicles.

Rescuers from nearby businesses rushed to try and help.

Watch Commander, Grahame Calcraft, led fire brigade rescuers.

“The driver was trapped between the seats and the roof of the car but was conscious and quite chirpy.

“A paramedic was unsure if he had suffered neck or back injuries and asked if we could get him out on a long board stretcher.

“We removed the roof to get him out and he was trapped for about 25 minutes.”

Huddersfield publican Sam Watt, who runs The Star at Folly Hall, was driving in front of the Aygo.

She said: “It was frightening.

“I heard a bang and glanced in my mirror to see a white car flying through the air.

“It disappeared from view as it somersaulted high into the air and I then saw it crash down, roll over and land on its side.

“I thought the driver must be really badly hurt but I gather he was not that bad.

“It was just like something out of a Hollywood stunt movie.

“I managed to pull up a few yards further on and called 999.”
