A £3.5m development project as been unveiled at a private school in Huddersfield.

Huddersfield Grammar School announced plans to spend the money over the next two years to improve the school’s site and facilities.

Two new buildings will be constructed this summer on the site, at Marsh , to provide new teaching accommodation.

One block will provide 12 new classrooms, while a second will give students state-of-the-art food technology and science facilities.

The plans for the Luck Lane campus follow investment secured from parent company, Cognita, and will enable significant improvement to be made to buildings, classrooms and outside play space.

The development work is expected to start in July of this year.

It is a huge development on what is an historic Huddersfield site.

Huddersfield Grammar School, which has 408 pupils aged between three and 16, has been in operation for the past 15 years.

Prior to that the building was known as St David’s School.

It had been built much earlier as a family home for part of the mill-owning Crowther family.

It is hoped that the new facilities will enhance Huddersfield Grammar School’s reputation for academic excellence.

Headmaster Mr Tim Hoyle said: “I am delighted that Huddersfield Grammar School is able to benefit from this substantial investment.

“It demonstrates Cognita’s commitment to the pupils and parents of the school and is a testament to the hard work and efforts of our staff.

“The school already achieves great things for its pupils, both in terms of academic results and well-being, but with increased and more modern facilities and resources, our future looks even brighter.’’

He said the new 12-classroom block would encompass the pre-prep school and the specialist facilities for food technology, science and art.

Some classes would relocate into the main Grade II listed building while the prep-school is to be clad in cedarwood and stone to provide modern facilities.

Cognita’s UK managing director, Ed Hyslop, said: “We are delighted to be able to provide this substantial support for Huddersfield Grammar School at such an important stage of the school’s development.

“HGS is already a beacon for academic excellence, which it demonstrates through outstanding results.

“The new buildings and facilities will improve the educational experience for all pupils and we look forward to a new era for this long-standing and highly regarded school.”

Huddersfield Grammar School is owned by Cognita, a leading international schools group that offers education through its network of 55 independent schools in the UK, Asia, Spain and Latin America.
