More warm and dry weather is on the way for Huddersfield.

And that’s good news for weekend events such as Honley Show, the Miners’ Gala at the National Coal Mining Museum and the brass band contest in Holmfirth.

But it shows what a difference a year makes.

This time in 2012 the town was in the grip of torrential rain and Honley Show was cancelled on the day it was due to be held.

It was one of many functions in Huddersfield washed out by the sodden summer.

But this week has seen temperatures rise and every day bring warm weather.

And the balmy spell will continue into next week, said Huddersfield weather expert Paul Stevens.

He has recorded temperatures as high as 21.2º Celsius this week, which is about two degrees above normal.

But the average has been slightly lower than the average for the start of June.

Stevens said: “The front bringing our weather at the moment is coming over the relatively cold North Sea so we are not getting the really hot weather we would have if it came from the continent.

“But the good news is that we are in the middle of a good long spell of summery weather – which is great news after all the cold and wet weather of recent months.

“It is set to stay with us until Monday at the earliest and although we may have a good deal of cloud about each morning, the days should be dry and warm with sunshine.

“That’s good news for people wanting to plan weekend events.

“After next week I think we will see more of a mixture, with warm and dry spells interspersed with a few cooler and wetter days, but that is more of a typical summer.”

Honley Show organisers have been hard at work all week preparing the showground at Farnley Tyas.

They have been erecting the marquees for the various show attractions and setting out the arenas for the activities.

Crowds of more than 10,000 are expected at the event.
