MORRISONS has confirmed it plans to build a second supermarket in the Holme Valley.

The Bradford-based chain has confirmed it plans to open a store in Honley , three miles from an existing store in Meltham.

And the public will be invited to see plans for the 2,404sq m (25,876 sq ft) store, which Morrisons hopes to open off Huddersfield Road.

The site occupied by Keith Drake animal feeds, adjacent to Kirklees Council ’s existing highways depot, has been linked to Morrisons in the past.

Morrisons’ proposal also includes plans for a new council highways depot.

You can see the plans by Morrisons – and its partner Limes Developments – at Honley Community Centre, Stoney Lane, on June 20 (12.30pm to 3.30pm) or Trinity Church, Moor Bottom, on June 21 (2pm to 7.30pm).

Morrisons Development Executive, James Smith, said: “We, together with Limes Development Ltd, are committed to working in partnership with all interested parties to ensure the delivery of a high quality scheme that meets both local needs and food shopping requirements of the area.

“A new Morrisons store will play an important role both in providing jobs and greater competition and choice for the weekly shop. We see this exhibition as an important step in securing the best possible solution for the site.

“As part of our plans, Morrisons is spearheading the redevelopment of a council highway depot on adjacent land. This includes a new office building for the depot, safeguarding this important facility in the district.

“We hope for a good turnout at the event as we are interested to hear what local people think of our proposed scheme. Everyone is welcome.”

Holme Valley has become a battleground for Morrisons and its rivals Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

Tesco is currently awaiting the results of an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate after its proposal to build a 23,000sq ft superstore off New Mill Road, Holmfirth, was rejected by Kirklees Council.

Meanwhile, Morrisons is planning to expand its Meltham store to a similar size while Sainsbury’s is believed to be investigating the Riverside shopping centre in Holmfirth.
