FIVE thousand properties in the Huddersfield area were affected by a lack of water today following a mains burst.

Yorkshire Water  said the 12" main burst occurred at lunchtime, at the junction of Abbey Road and Penistone Road in Shepley.

It affected domestic and business properties in the Shepley, Shelley, Kirkburton, Lepton and surrounding HD8 areas. Customers in the area may be experiencing low pressure or no water.

YW said there are not believed to be any health and safety risks to residents and police helped with the management of traffic in the area for a short time.

A spokeswoman said: “We are now on site with our business partners to assess the burst and to try and restore a water supply to the area.

“We are looking at rezoning, essentially sourcing water from other parts of our network.

“Our vulnerable customers are currently being contacted, to ensure they are prioritised for bottled water."

Bottled water was delivered to the following locations at 5pm:

* Black Bull, Marsh Lane, Shepley,

* Smiths Arms,  Town Gate, Kirkburton,

* The Farmers Boy, Marsh Lane, Shepley,

* Kirkburton Library, Turnshaws Road,

* Lepton Library, Highgate Lane,

* Shelley Village Hall in Huddersfield Road, Shelley.

YW say it is possible that customers may experience discoloured water when the supply is restored.
