SOME residents in rural Huddersfield awoke this morning to find they were still without water following a mains burst yesterday lunchtime.

Ian Littlewood, a married father-of-two from Joss Lane, Shepley, said: "We don't have any water at all, there's nothing coming out of the taps.

"My two girls were moaning this morning as they have had to go to school without being able to brush their teeth.

"There were supposed to be bottles of water left outside various depots including the Black Bull just near where we live but there was nothing when I checked this morning.

"The problems started last night. We had water but it was brown and not drinkable.

"But I've checked with my brother this morning who lives in Shelley and he now has water so some places do have it."

Five thousand properties in the Shepley, Shelley, Kirkburton and Lepton area were affected yesterday at lunchtime following a 12ins main burst at the junction of Abbey road and Penistone Road, Shepley.

Yorkshire Water managed to get many of the properties back on supply last night but there are still problems in certain areas today.

Many residents have reported cloudy or dirty water after getting back on supply.

Yorkshire Water say this is most often caused by changes in flow or pressure which can leave iron and manganese sediments within the water pipes.

Their advice is to run the tap which is fed first from your water supply for several minutes (this will usually be your kitchen tap), then fill a jug and leave it to stand until any sediment has settled to the bottom and then pour the clean water from the top of the jug for use.

And Catherine Walter of Ashes Lane, Almondbury, near Castle Hill, said she had also suffered problems suggesting the difficulties ran further than HD8.

Some residents complained that when attending water distribution centres announced by Yorkshire Water there was actually no bottled water there.

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said: "In the initial stages of the incident the locations of the water depots was given out prior to supplies actually arriving. This meant that people were arriving at the sites before supplies were delivered.

"We do acknowledge that it took longer for supplies to be delivered to the depots than originally anticipated and we apologise to our customers for the inconvenience."
