MAJOR road works are set to start in Honley next month.

And it is widely expected the roads being repaired will form part of the Tour de France route next summer.

Council officials have confirmed the massive scheme for main routes in Honley which are expected to be named on the official Tour route when it is announced in October.

The resurfacing project on the A6024 and the A616 is set to take two weeks and drivers will face road closures and hold-ups.

Much of the work will be done in the evenings.

Monday July 8 will see the start of the road resurfacing at Honley on both the A6024 Woodhead Road and the A616 Huddersfield Road.

The work will start outside Reins Mill on the A616 extending through both sets of traffic lights – by Honley Filling Station and at the Station Road junction – through to 150m past the Jacob’s Well public house on the A6024.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “Work will be restricted to off-peak hours (9.30am to 3.30pm and then 7pm to 11pm) and should be completed in two weeks, weather permitting.

“Traffic restrictions will be in place which will inevitably cause some delays and disruption and road users are asked to find alternative routes if possible.

“It is hoped to keep disruption for local people and businesses to a minimum whilst the work is under way.

“Nearby businesses and residents have been invited to comment on the proposed works. Assistance or measures to minimise disruption and disturbance whilst the works are taking place will be provided where possible.

“Local residents will be kept informed of developments and temporary traffic signs will appear at the closure points in advance.

“Temporary traffic signals will be in use and there will some evening road closures.”

The planned closures are:

Station Road, on July 9 and 12 from 7pm to 11pm, at its junction with the A6024 Woodhead Road. The diversion is via the A616 New Mill Road.

Eastgate, also on July 9 and 12 between 7pm and 11pm, at its junction with A6024 Woodhead Road. The official diversion via Lockwood, Netherton and Meltham Mills is A6024 Woodhead Road, A616 Huddersfield Road, A616 Woodhead Road, A616 Parkgate, A616 Woodhead Road, A616 Bridge Street, B6108 Meltham Road, B6108 Huddersfield Road, Meltham Mills Road, Knowle Lane, C574 Meltham Road, Moorbottom, Lane Head, Westgate, the unaffected length of Eastgate and vice-versa. Local drivers may know quicker alternatives.

A6024 Woodhead Road (between the A616 New Mill Road and Station Road junctions) on July 10, 11, 16 and 17 from 7pm to 11pm. The diversion is via Station Road and the A616 New Mill Road.

Alternative routes will be signed and drivers are asked to leave extra time for their journey

The schemes are part of a £3.8m road reconstruction plan by the council.

Other ‘key asset’ road schemes include the A616 at Lockwood Road in Lockwood, Huddersfield Road in Honley, Chapel Hill, Folly Hall and the A6024 Huddersfield Road in Holmfirth.

The roads are widely expected to be the route used by the world’s top cyclists in July 2014.
