MORE than 20 firefighters tackled a large barn fire in Kirkheaton this morning.

The blaze broke out at Cockley Hill Lane, Kirkheaton last night at 9.30pm and saw crews battle until 5am this morning to bring it under control.

Fire crews from Huddersfield, Mirfield and Dewsbury were called and reported half of the building, which was used to store animals winter feed, was involved in fire. There was also concerns for the barn roof which was made from asbestos.

Dewsbury Watch Commander Chris Johnson told how they were hampered in their efforts by a shortage of water hydrants and forced to lay hoses across roads some distance away.

Police attended and cordoned off several lanes.

No one was injured. Crews remained at the scene until the early hours of this morning dampening down.

It is thought the blaze started due to over heating and chemical reactions in the hay.

An investigation is now underway.
