Mr Stephen Bottom presided at the business meeting of the Round Table at the Druids Arms, Greetland. Mr Martin Dyson was elected vice-chairman. Members discussed the charity bonfire at Hullen Edge recreation ground on Saturday, November 6.

The monthly coffee morning was held in All Saints' Schoolroom. Stalls included cakes and a white elephant stall. Mrs Vivienne Weston, Mrs Cynthia Hollas and Mrs Margaret Squire were winners in the raffle. The event raised £16 for the church fabric fund.

Mrs Patricia Cank presided at the meeting of the Southgate Methodist Church Ladies' Guild in the Langdale Meeting Room. Mr and Mrs R Mitchell from Copley gave the second part of their illustrated talk, Out And About.

The annual quiz and raffle organised by the Elland/Riorges Association was held in Blackley Cricket Club pavilion. Mr Paul Cleary was the question master. The winners were Mr Stuart and Mrs Susan Hamilton. Supper was provided by Mrs Eunice Park.

Elland Male Voice Choir and Halifax Male Voice Choir joined forces to present a concert last week at Brighouse Civic Hall in aid of Childline. Guests were the Clifton Village Handbell Ringers under the leadership of Mr David Sunderland. Mr Philip Chadwick was the compere. The choirs were conducted by Mrs Janet Revill and Dr Eilidh Gunson. Mrs Sylvia Priestley and Mrs Maureen Davies were accompanists. The choirs were compered by Miss Kathleen Mitchell, of Elland, and the president of the Halifax Choir, Mr Roy Mitchell. A raffle was held.

The Over 60s Tuesday Club met at the Wainwright Hall. Four new members were welcomed. The report on ill members was given by Mrs Betty Wagstaff. Mrs Marjorie Watson sold books and jigsaws and Mrs Evelyn Scott organised the raffle. Bingo was organised by Mr Trevor Bates and Mrs Ivy Hammond, who presided. Members enjoyed a coach trip to Cleveleys and the Blackpool illuminations, organised by secretary, Mrs Barbara Walmsley.

Mrs Joan Moore led a meeting of the Bethesda Methodist Church Women's Hour. Mr Donald McCloughlin gave a talk The Old Songs Are The Best, and sang songs, accompanied by taped music. Mrs Norma Trotter gave the notices. Miss Kathleen Mitchell was the pianist. Tea was provided by Mrs Margaret Green and served by Mrs Cynthia Pickerill and Mrs Olive Lloyd.

The 31st annual meeting of the Greater Historical Society was held at the Wainwright Hall. President, Mr Brian Hargreaves, gave the welcome. A minute's silence was observed for the late Mr Lawrence Greenwood. Reports were given by Mr Hargreaves and chairman Alan Stansfield. Officers elected were: president Mr Brian Hargreaves, chairman Mr Alan Stansfield, vice-chairman Mrs Maureen Odams, secretary Mrs Carol Kaye, treasurer Mrs Brenda Holbrook, excursion secretary Mrs Janice Nichols, social secretary Mrs Jean Redford and librarian Mrs Heather Foster. A certificate and honorary life membership was presented to Mr Albert Rinder, a member for 25 years and past president for 20 years. The meeting was followed by a talk, given by Mrs Odams, on buildings in Blackley,featuring the chapel, cricket club, Golden Fleece and prominent houses. She was assisted by her husband, Mr Alan Odams. Thanks were expressed by Mr Stansfield.

Members of Eland Ladies' Club met at the home of Mrs Jeanne Garside for coffee, fellowship and a raffle.

The Bethesda Methodist Church Bible Fellowship met in the meeting room. Opening prayers were led by Mrs Dorothy Wilkinson. Readings were given by Mrs Edna Landall, Mrs Renee Wilkinson, Miss Winifred Akroyd, Mrs Trotter, Mrs Cynthia Pickerill, Mrs Mary Rathmell, Miss Nacie Bell, Mrs Olive Lloyd and Miss Lily Burnett. Mrs Rathmell and Mrs Trotter were tea hostesses.

The Disabled and Able Bodied Social Club met in the community room at Melrose Court. Mr Ralph Golding presided and was the bingo caller. Mrs Ethel Goodall, Mrs Louie O'Conner, Mrs Hilda Longbottom, Mrs Shaw and Miss Ethel Hall were prize winners. Refreshments were served.

Matthew Bason, 23, of Northamptonshire, made his seventh appearance at the monthly organ concert at the Rex.

A fashion show by the Ladies' Circle at Bertie's Banqueting rooms raised £1,420 for Breakthrough West Yorkshire (breast cancer), the chosen charity of chairman, Susanne Blackburn. qEight members attended the North Eastern Regional Lunch at York Race Course. Two of the original Calendar Girls were the guest speakers.

Fartown

The Rev Dr Philip Bee led the sacramental service at Trinity Methodist Church. Miss A Crawshaw was the organist.Two readings were given. Thirty past members held a reunion. Refreshments were served followed by a short service. Trinity Friends held a meeting in the church coffee lounge when Mrs Audrey Helm spoke about Humour.

Woodhouse Townswomen's Guild held their meeting in Fartown High School. Joan Holt introduced Gill Mitchell and her friend Jan, who led an aromatherapy evening and demonstration. The vote of thanks was given by Joan Andrews.

Lightcliffe

Lightcliffe and District Local History Society held an exhibition of photographs depicting the changing face of the district over the last century. The meeting was chaired by Robert Horne, who gave an illustrated talk on rambles from Hipperholme to Tong.

Miss Karen Bridge presided at a meeting of The Ladies' Fellowship of Christ Church. She introduced guest presenter Mrs Wendy Dunstone, who gave a demonstration of hand-made greetings cards.

Members of St Matthew's Church, Lightcliffe, held an art exhibition of 260 paintings. Thirty four were sold in Lightcliffe C of E Primary School, raising more than £1,200 for church funds.

LINDLEY

Father Lawrence Wood was the guest celebrant at a eucharist at St Stephen's Church. He read the gospel and gave the address. Readings were given by Miss Julia Taylor and Miss Margaret Wilkinson. Mrs Janet Hayden led the intercessions and helped with communion along with Mrs Carol Ramsden. Mr John Bailey was the organist. The sale of coffee and biscuits raised £17.83 for the building repair and maintenance fund.

Mrs Nichola Lee led the service at the Methodist Centre and Mrs Gillian Holmes gave a reading. The address was given by the Rev Rob Hilton who also baptised baby Danielle Leathwood. The band accompanied the hymns, led by Mrs Margaret Waddington on the piano. The evening service was conducted by superintendent minister the Rev Peter Hancock.

Mr Gordon Dawson chaired the monthly parish church council meeting. Reports were given by Miss Margaret Wilkinson, treasurer, Mr Brian Gott, buildings, Mr Glenn Stewart, standing committee, youth club, social committee and junior church, and Mr Dawson, Churches Together in Lindley.

Mrs Janet Greenwood gave a talk on the role of physiotherapists and their treatments at the monthly meeting of St Stephen's Mothers' Union in the community room. She was welcomed by branch president, Mrs Gillian McHugh and thanked by Mrs Judith Lodge.

Sunday afternoon evensong at St Stephen's Church was conducted by Fr Lawrence Wood. He gave the address and baptised babies William Lewis Thompson and Megan Louise Hardcastle. Mr John Bailey was the organist.

The Methodist Men's Supper Club was attended by 19 members. After a meal, the Rev Cyril Blount gave a talk entitled Skeleton In My Cupboard. He was welcomed and thanked by Mr Hubert Crowther.

Thirty nine members of the Methodist Men's Supper Club enjoyed a canal cruise and lunch in Skipton, organised by Mr Allen Hawe.

Members of the Tower Townswomen's Guild celebrated their 46th anniversary with a dinner at the Pennine Manor, Scapegoat Hill organised by Mrs Rosie Scott.
