Police have released confirmed details about the armed siege in Lowerhouses.
West Yorkshire Police said they were called at 1.36pm with concerns about the safety of a man in a house in Hall Cross Grove, which is off Hall Cross Road, Lowerhouses.
Chief Insp Jonathan Blackwell said: "Due to the nature of the threat armed officers were sent to the scene in Hall Cross Grove.
"The road has been closed and is expected to remain closed for the foreseeable future".
Police said it was not believed anyone else is involved in the incident.
Unconfirmed reports from people at the scene said a man claimed to have a gun.
Buses which run past the end of Hall Cross Grove have been diverted.
One resident who lives just yards from the house at the centre of the siege said: "It's very surreal".
Kieran Carter, of Hall Cross Road, said: "I was out in the back garden, which backs on to Hall Cross Grove, tidying up some rubbish when all of a sudden the police were there.
"They told me they needed to use my garden to get through to a house and told me to go inside.
"There are three of them there at the minute: one with what looks like a machine-gun, another one with a dog and the third what looks like a grenade launcher.
"There's also a very big vehicle pulled up outside. It looks as though it is an armoured vehicle".
"It's all very surreal. I know the guy who lives in the house and he keeps himself to himself".
