Retired librarian Frances Stott has raised £8,000 for four charities from sales of her Mirfield history book.

Frances, 61, published her book – entitled simply Mirfield – last November.

She sought sponsors to help publish the book, a pictorial history of the town, and pledged the profits to charity.

Last week she was at Mirfield Library to hand over four cheques for £2,000 each to the British Heart Foundation; Diabetes UK; Kirkwood Hospice and Yorkshire Cancer Research.

The fundraising continues, however, as the books remain on sale.

Frances said the book had been really well received and she was delighted at its success.

She added: “I am very grateful to everyone who has made this possible from the people who lent me photographs and provided information, to the shops who have kindly stocked it and to everyone who has purchased a copy.

“Any further money raised will also be shared between the four charities.”

The book, which has 1,100 illustrations, has a foreword written by Mirfield-born Sir Patrick Stewart.

It features historic street scenes and views of Mirfield.

The book, which costs £25, is available from Mirfield Library and shops Oops a Daisy and Mirfield News in Huddersfield Road, the Community of the Resurrection shop or via www.greenfieldhousepublications.co.uk
