A new 300bhp compact ‘super-SUV’ is planned to head up Volkswagen’s Tiguan range – and it’s set to hit UK roads in 2018. With performance slated to emulate that of the Golf R Estate, the new Tiguan Coupé R will take the fight to the Mercedes GLA45 AMG and Audi RS Q3.

Its 2.0-litre turbo will be similarly tuned to the Golf R’s, which means it’ll produce 280lb ft of torque as well as that impressive power figure. A 0-62mph sprint of 5.1sec is predicted, thanks to the use of a six-speed dual-clutch auto, four-wheel drive and electronic torque vectoring.

Further performance credentials over the rest of the Tiguan range will include adaptive damping and a reduced ride height, although the standard MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension will still feature.

Developed by VW’s R division, the hot five-seater will go on sale less than a year after the standard Tiguan Coupé, which is set to arrive in 2017.
