This week we have seen commemorations of one of the most important periods of our history.

It’s 100 years since Britain entered the First World War and the nations involved went on to lose millions of fighting men as well as civilians and children of both sexes.

The ‘war to end all wars’ didn’t do that, but certainly whetted the war mongering appetite of soldier Adolf Hitler who vowed his country would never be humiliated again.

And, sadly, we know the rest.

As part of the commemoration of WWI the Examiner has had access to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s detailed data and we have created a special page to find not only your relatives but anyone who may have lived in and around where you live now.

It’s a sobering thought that one day a young man marched off from the end of your street with a belief that he’d return after an adventure on the continent.

Tragically, too few returned after four years of war.
