I’m not a huge Elton John fan to be honest.

Don’t get me wrong, I like a few of Reg’s numbers but I’m not a diehard.

Which I presume Uruguay’s Luis Suarez must be.

His apology on Monday really shows that Sorry is the hardest word - if you want to continue to pretend you didn’t do something that millions of people saw you do.

For those of you living under a rock, in Uruguay’s last group game he appeared to bite Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini.

So far so shocking. But this isn’t Suarez’s first bite. It’s not his second.

The latest episode is his third in the last few years after incidents with Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic while at Liverpool in April 2013 and PSV’s Otman Bakkal while at Ajax in 2010.

There was outrage and the Liverpool striker was duly banned by FIFA from all football for four months and nine international matches.

You’d expect the player to be shamefaced about his latest indiscretion and his colleagues to keep quiet.

That’s not quite what’s happened.

Apart from Uruguayan journalists pointing fingers at our very own Fourth Estate the Uruguayan manager also hit out, blaming the media, saying lovely Luis had been made a ‘scapegoat’ and he also resigned from some FIFA committees in solidarity.

So far, so football-related. But now the country’s president Jose Muijca, who the BBC rather wonderfully say is renowned for ‘plain speaking’ said FIFA were “a bunch of old sons of bitches” and described the ban as “fascist”.

On Monday Suarez, who told a disciplinary panel that “I lost my balance, making my body unstable and falling on top of my opponent” went on to say: “I deeply regret what occurred.

“I apologise to Giorgio Chiellini and the entire football family.

“I vow to the public that there will never again be another incident like this.”

Quite right Luis.

But where have we heard that before?

“I am truly very sorry about the incident with Branislav Ivanovic,” he said after his last molar malfunction.

“I hope that all the people who I offended at Anfield will grant me forgiveness and I again repeat my apology to Branislav.

“I acknowledge that my actions were not acceptable on the football pitch.”

Er, right. So what to do with Chewy Luis?

I do have some sympathy with Liverpool in the fact that they’ve copped (no pun intended) for a bad deal here.

Suarez, who recently signed a new contract then had a stormer of a season, went off to the World Cup a hero and came back, well, still a hero in Uruguay.

There’s talk that Barcelona are interested in buying him for north of £80m.

A Liverpool fan in the office believes the ‘apology’ was nothing more than a way to justify that he really is a sorry puppy and won’t do it again .

And, by the way, do you know what time the next flight goes from John Lennon Airport to Barcelona?

Interestingly Barcelona Airport’s full name is Barcelona El Prat Airport.

Maybe Luis would feel at home there after all.
