My all-time favourite headline appeared in the left wing tabloid The Morning Star several years ago.

It referred to the death of this country’s greatest poet of the 20th century Philip Larkin and read: “Poet dies in private hospital”.

So, yes, the left will still spite you beyond the grave. I suppose his admiration for Margaret Thatcher didn’t help either. But now the Socialist Worker has gone one better by making fun of a 17-year-old boy mauled to death by a polar bear.

Not an obvious rib-tickler perhaps but he did have a posh name – Horatio Chapple – and he did go to this country’s most famous public school so I guess the headline: ‘Eton by bear? The inquest begins’ was irresistible to a certain mind.

Just imagine the outcry if the boot had been on the other foot.
