A man followed his ex and threatened her after she refused to let him see their young son, a court heard.

Mikas Tekeste was already on court bail conditions not to contact Terhas Hagos when he approached her as she pushed their two-year-old along a Paddock street.

Kirklees magistrates were told that the 20-year-old’s actions prompted a driver to get out of her car and offer help to Miss Hagos.

The bench heard that Tekeste is accused of assaulting his former partner of three years. He faces trial.

He was granted bail by the court on condition that he did not contact her or go to the family home in Victory Avenue, Paddock.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting, said that at 3.30pm on August 4 Miss Hagos walked from St Thomas’ Church in Thornton Lodge towards Church Street in Paddock and she saw Tekeste.

Mr Bozman said: “She asked him what he was doing and he said that he wanted to talk. Then she carried on walking but he followed and said that he wanted to see his son.

“He grabbed both of her arms and held onto the pushchair to stop her from moving.”

Mr Bozman said that when Miss Hagos told him that he would have to speak to his solicitor regarding contact, he made threats towards her.

He added: “A woman got out of her car and asked her if she was ok.

“Miss Hagos said she wasn’t but Mr Tekeste said she was and the woman left. She stated that she was going to call police but he wouldn’t let her go.”

Tekeste then lifted his son out of the pushchair and took pictures of him on his mobile phone. He handed the child back to Miss Hagos and left , Mr Bozman said.

He said that she didn’t report the matter immediately to police because she felt scared.

Mr Bozman said: “She said that the incident lasted between 10 and 20 minutes and Mr Tekeste was right up in her face.”

Tekeste, of no fixed address, denied the allegations. He said that he had lifted his son from his pushchair when he spotted him being looked after by another woman outside a shop.

Tekeste claimed that when Miss Hagos left the shop he put his child back and left without exchanging words with his ex.

However, magistrates found the bail breach proved.

A new charge of making a threat to kill was laid against him and he will stand trial for this and the assault case. He was remanded in custody until September 3.
