Police have seized the dog which is thought to have badly bitten a postman in Meltham.

Now vets are to carry out an examination of the dog to determine its breed.

They need to establish if the dog is a banned breed or not.

Postman Jason Lee, 41, suffered a terrible injury to his arm as he protected his face when the dog struck in Meltham nine days ago.

The attack happened when Jason approached the house in Copley Avenue at 12.15pm last Tuesday.

The dog ripped a large chunk of flesh from his forearm.

Royal Mail have suspended mail deliveries to houses in several streets in the area.

Residents have had to collect their post from Holmfirth Post Office.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail is seeking clarification from West Yorkshire Police regarding the situation of the dog in question.

“We still intend to carry out a risk assessment of the area to ensure our postmen and women can work safely.

“Royal Mail hopes to resume deliveries as soon as possible.”
