Improvements to Huddersfield’s post offices are being made as part of a major investment programme to support the post office network.

The Government has already committed £1.34bn for the Post Office network to ensure there is no programme of closures and investment is made to update branches.

Last November, ministers announced a further £640m investment in the network to take place from 2015 to 2018.

The commitment includes maintaining the size of the branch network – currently standing at more than 11,500, which is more than all the banks and building societies combined. A Post Office spokeswoman said the investment programme would see up to 8,000 branches modernised – with additional investment in more than 3,000 smaller community branches.

In the new-style local branches, like Emley, subpostmasters can combine the post office and retail counter rather than run a separate, screened post office counter in their shops.

Customers will also benefit from longer opening hours and increased convenience.
