Trendy kids will hit the catwalk to raise money for an ill classmate.

Pupils from Hopton Primary School in Mirfield and their parents will become models for a day in aid of Sam Bottomley’s Wish to Walk campaign.

The fashion show at the school on Friday, February 21, will raise funds for six-year-old Sam Bottomley, who was born with cerebral palsy and needs to raise £35,000 for a life-changing operation.

Sam’s illness mainly affects the muscles in his legs, making them so tight and stiff that he is unable to stand or walk without adult support.

Mother Karen Bottomley, 45, said: “He enjoys school but can feel left out when the other children are playing in the playground as he can’t really join in or keep up with his little walker.”

The Mirfield boy has been managing his condition with exercises and botox injections to his legs, but now he has been given a chance for an operation at Leeds General Infirmary called selective dorsal rhizotomy.

The operation will enable the muscles in Sam’s legs to move more freely so that they can be subsequently strengthened with physiotherapy. This should ultimately enable Sam to stand and walk on his own.

The cost of the operation itself will be £15,000, while the rest of the money is needed for the two years of intense physio that will follow the operation.

Clothes for the fashion show have been provided by The Missing Label shop in Mirfield.

Local businesses have agreed to sponsor the show, while Hopton Primary School has donated goods for the event and raffle prizes.

The show starts at 7pm. Entry is £5 for adults and £3 for children, including a free drink. Tickets can be purchased from The Sandwich Shop and Lower Hopton News, both on Calder Road, Lower Hopton.
