Punters at a pub have donated money to a wheely good cause.

Staff and customers at the Rose and Crown, Thurstonland, gave £950 to the Streetbikes wheelchair bike fund.

Gill Greaves, of Streetbikes, who collected the cash, took along some bicycles, a wheelchair bike, trike and handcycle to show the scope of the work the organisation.

And Gill said the bikes have the potential to bring people of all abilities together for a major cycling festival she’s organising next year.

“I am going to launch a Community Tour de Yorkshire ride for next May,” she said.

“This will be a ride from Spen down the Greenway, picking up people from Dewsbury Moor, Chickenley, Savile Town, Ravensthorpe, the London Park estate in Mirfield, Deighton, Fartown, Huddersfield town centre, Dalton and coming into Huddersfield and from Colne Valley, Golcar Brockholes, Honley, Netherton and Walpole.

“This will end up with a true community cycling festival at Huddersfield station.”

Streetbikes is a project to boost cycling in Kirklees. They take unwanted bikes and refit them to give more people the chance to cycle.

Gill is hoping for people to sign up to her Tour plan.

She added: “Our bicycle recycle scheme is delivered by asking local residents and the council refuse sites to donate unwanted bikes to us.

“These are then given an overhaul by qualified mechanics to get them into full working order so that they can be donated back into the community.

“We gave 600 bikes away in 2012 which we donated to members of the community who are not in a financial position to buy a bikes for family members.

“We aim to encourage families to introduce regular cycling activities into their lives which will potentially encourage younger members to continue for years to come.”

The Tour de France will be in Huddersfield on July 6 next year.
