Huddersfield University health centre swine flu warning

A total of six new cases of the bug have been diagnosed in Yorkshire this week alone.

So far, there have been no confirmed cases in Kirklees.

London and the West Midlands have been the worst affected areas with a combined number of around 2,0000 sufferers.

At hospitals in Birmingham, special swine flu bays have been set-up in A&E departments to cope with a 25% rise in admissions due to people suffering symptoms.

A fortnight ago, the World Health Organisation announced the swine flu outbreak was now a pandemic – the first in over 40 years.

People showing signs of swine flu are being advised to stay at home and seek medical help.

Symptoms can be checked by visiting the NHS Direct website – www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk – or by calling a GP or NHS Direct on 0845 4647. A swine flu information line is available on 0800 1 513 513.

Health bosses are also warning of the importance of good hygiene.

More information about hygiene can be found on the NHS Choices website at www.nhs.uk.
