Anti-flooding projects feature on new spending plans by Kirklees Council.

Two projects to assess and deal with flood risk are being funded from a £336,000 grant from the Environment Agency.

New flood measures include replacing or improving 36 rubbish grilles which protect culvert entrances.

Kirklees Council will put £45,000 towards the overall cost.

A further £86,000 of Environment Agency funding will go towards a survey of mill ponds with an extra £10,000 from the council.

Kirklees will inspect 70 council and privately-owned ponds and small reservoirs to determine the level of flood risk from dam failure.

The inspections will then be used to provide recommendations to landowners for future maintenance and management to prevent flood risk.

Clr Cathy Scott, Cabinet member for Streetscene, said: “The updated Capital Plan allows for anti-flood measures to be undertaken to try to reduce the severity and number of flood events in the future.

“Flooding can cause damage to both businesses and residential property causing hardship and heartache so any measures that we can take to reduce the possibility of damage is to be welcomed.”

The measures are included in the Highways Capital Plan that Kirklees Cabinet will consider tomorrow.

The plan, which totals £15.6m for this year and £12.2m for 2014/15, sets out council investment in road resurfacing, street lighting, road safety, drainage, traffic signals, car parks and public transport provision.

Kirklees councillors approved a plan in July, but it returns to Cabinet for an update.

The revised plan will also see £1m road resurfacing scheme for A-roads brought forward from 2014/15.

Kirklees says some of the locations form part of the route used by the Tour de France cyclists. Others are not on the route but are critical to the network.

The advance work will include resurfacing for the A629 Halifax Road at Ainley Top; resurfacing for A616 Woodhead Road at Berry Brow; pavements and resurfacing for the A616 Lockwood Road; resurfacing for the C560 Clough Road, Crimble Clough, and pavement work on the A629 Wakefield Road, Dalton.
