A Town fan living in Australia has flown in for Monday’s game ... and he was at the last one when Town were trying to get into the top tier of English football.

Jed Robinson was at the match in 1970 when Town went to Middlesbrough and got the 1-1 draw they needed to win promotion to the old first division.

The 60-year-old said: “I’ll never forget that game. Steve Smith scored the goal from 30 yards and it flew in like a missile – so much so it ended up stuck in the stanchion and the keeper had trouble getting it out. And then Frank Worthington followed that up with a bicycle kick that hit the underside of the bar and came out. The atmosphere was brilliant, especially in the railway station waiting for the train home.”

Town went up as champions and the team featured legendary names such as Trevor Cherry, Terry Poole, Dennis Clarke, Roy Ellam, Geoff Hutt and Jimmy Nicholson.

Jed ended up carrying the golden goal board around the old Leeds Road ground as a schoolboy and so saw behind the scenes.

He said: “The players would relax before the game playing snooker in a room underneath the grandstand. Sometimes they would be playing up to half-an-hour before kick off and manager Ian Greaves would have to go in to drag them out. I’ll never forget Frank coming in one day with platform shoes, designer clothes and a velvet patchwork jacket. He really was something else.”

Jed was educated at the former Newsome County Secondary School and went to Brisbane in 1982 at the age of 25.

He ended up moving there and worked for Fosters brewing and lives with wife Diana at Bondi Beach in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. He is now involved in medical tourism mainly in Thailand for people wanting treatments such facelifts or dental work.

His sister Janet lives at Gledholt and he’s been staying with her in the run-up to the match.

Jed said of Monday’s game: “It’s just too close to call – it’s whoever turns up on the day. This is the day we really need Aaron Mooy to pull off a spectacular free trick and Nahki Wells is due a good day.”
