The Super Bowl is America's biggest annual sporting event and people across the world look forward to it each year.

Millions of fans are expected to tune in to watch the game and there's also a top pop star lined up to perform at half time.

What is the Super Bowl and who is playing this year?

Tom Brady of the New England Patriots

It is the annual championship game of the American National Football League (NFL).

It decides which team is the best at American football and the champions will take home the Vince Lomardi trophy.

This year fans will get to see the New England Patriots take on the Atlanta Falcons.

The Super Bowl will be held at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Who is performing?

Lady Gaga will be taking the stage at half time - she is expected to perform around 1am GMT.

Speaking to Houston's Mix 62.5 radio, Gaga said: "We were [rehearsing] in the tent for about a week and a half, then we had to move to bigger studios in Hollywood where we are working on the rest of the show.

"And then we will send that equipment to Houston where we will finish rehearsals. Fans can expect a performance that spans my career so far."

40-year-old country star Luke Bryan will be singing the national anthem this year.

What time does it start and where can I watch it?

The Super Bowl will kick off at 11:50pm GMT on Sunday, February 5 and is expected to last until around 3am.

BBC 1 will be showing coverage from 11:20pm to 12:05am with Mark Chapman, Osi Umenyiora and Jason Bell presenting live from the stadium.

Sky Sports will be showing the event from 10pm until 3am.
