BRITAIN JOINS SEA SEARCH FOR MISSING EGYPTAIR JET

The search for a missing EgyptAir plane that disappeared over the Mediterranean is continuing for a second day as British military units joined the operation.

EgyptAir flight MS804 - an Airbus A320 with 56 passengers and 10 crew members from Paris to Cairo - went down about halfway between the Greek island of Crete and Egypt's coastline, or around 175 miles offshore, after take-off from Charles de Gaulle Airport.

The Briton on board, Richard Osman, a father of two, was described by his younger brother Alastair as a workaholic and a very admirable person who "never deviated from the straight path".

ACTORS CUMBERBATCH, NIGHY, EJIOFOR AND KNIGHTLEY BACK STAYING IN EU

Hollywood actors including Benedict Cumberbatch, Sir Patrick Stewart, Bill Nighy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Keira Knightley and Dame Kristin Scott Thomas are among leading figures from the arts world backing a vote to remain in the European Union.

Music stars Hot Chip, alt-J and Paloma Faith, authors Dame Hilary Mantel and John le Carre and fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood are also among the 282 figures supporting a Remain vote.

The group, including Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle and poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, said being part of the EU "bolsters Britain's leading role on the world stage", warning that Brexit would leave the country "an outsider shouting from the wings".

UNIVERSITY CHIEFS IN PUSH TO ENSURE STUDENTS REGISTERED TO VOTE IN RIGHT PLACE

Up to 200,000 students face missing out on a vote in the EU referendum because they do not know it is taking place in the holidays and are registered to vote in the wrong place, a survey has found.

University chiefs issued the findings as they promoted a push to ensure young voters are able to have their say on June 23 by registering at home addresses or requesting postal votes.

The Remain campaign is worried it might miss out on the support of students, who the poll confirmed are strongly in favour of the UK staying in the European Union - with the main party leaders both issuing appeals.

NHS POISED TO RECORD WORST FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE WITH £2BN-PLUS DEFICIT

NHS trusts across England are expected to record their worst financial performance in a single year, with a deficit of more than £2 billion.

Figures published on Friday for 2015/16 are expected to show a slight improvement on the worst case scenario deficit, but it will still be the poorest on record.

In February, a report containing the first nine months' worth of figures said the NHS was on track for a £2.8bn deficit across the year. It said if savings could be made in the final three months of the financial year, the figure may fall to around £2.4bn.

COUNCILS AND GP GROUPS 'OVERLOOKING LOCAL END OF LIFE CARE NEEDS'

Councils and GP groups across England are failing to plan for the needs of dying people, according to a new report.

The charity Hospice UK used the Freedom of Information Act to find out how well councils and NHS groups assessed the needs of dying people in their communities.

The results showed that more than a third (34%) of health and wellbeing boards, which are run by councils, do not consider the needs of dying people in their assessments of local needs.

BREAST CANCER DRUG REJECTED FOR NHS DESPITE DOUBLING DESTRUCTION OF TUMOURS

A breast cancer drug that has been shown to almost double the eradication of tumours has been rejected for use on the NHS.

In draft guidance, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) said it was uncertain how the effects of Perjeta (also called pertuzumab) seen in clinical trials would translate into long-term benefit for patients.

The news will come as a blow to some campaigners as there has been much excitement about the potential of Perjeta.

KATE TO LAUNCH SAILING SCHEMES FOR YOUNGSTERS AT BEN AINSLIE RACING BASE

The Duchess of Cambridge is to visit the America's Cup base of sailing champion Sir Ben Ainslie to see how youngsters are being inspired to join the marine industry.

In her role as royal patron of the 1851 Trust, a charity set up as part of the Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) effort to win the prestigious racing tournament, Kate will launch two initiatives aimed at involving children and young adults from diverse backgrounds in sailing and the technology of the sport.

It will be the third time that the duchess has visited the BAR base in Portsmouth, having dropped by before the centre was opened and again during the first round of the America's Cup World Series which was held in the city last July before being cut short by heavy winds and rain.
