A vicious hunting knife was found by police after four men ran from a car in a dark village car park.

Officers from Kirklees Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team were called to Kirkburton at about midnight on Saturday following reports of possible drug use or drug dealing.

When they arrived at the car park next to the tennis and football clubs off Burton Acres Lane four males fled a parked car and scattered.

Officers searched the car and found a 10-inch knife with a serated blade inside.

The driver later returned and was arrested for possessing an offensive weapon.

Pc Sally Baines said the suspects were from Huddersfield not Kirkburton.

She said: “We have had reports from residents that anti-social behaviour has been happening in that area, as well as possible drug dealing and drug use.

“On seeing the police car stop and the officers get out and approach the car, all four of them ran off.

“The car was searched and the knife, with a 10in blade, was found inside.

“Eventually the driver came back and was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon.

“You need to have a valid, lawful reason for carrying knives that you can prove. If we find a blade on you or in your car, you will be arrested.

“We’ve all seen the reports in the Examiner about recent stabbings in town and from the comments on Facebook, people are horrified that these kind of assaults are happening locally.

“We’re glad we’ve got one less knife in Huddersfield but we know there are a lot more out there.”

Pc Baines added: “This car was parked in a dark, unlit car park which is not very overlooked by any houses, ideal for parking up and not being seen.

“We’ve had issues in this car park for well over five years, which is why the area is patrolled as regularly as we can.

“If you know someone who carries knives, tell us. You can do this anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 111 555.”
