MORE than 1,000 women have signed up to run the Race for Life in Huddersfield, three weeks after the register for entries opened.

A total of 1,200 women have signed up for the three races at Greenhead Park in aid of Cancer Research UK on June 21 and 22.

It was almost three weeks ago that the charity opened its entry register and invited women to run the 5km race.

Jenny Key, area event manager, said: “So far we have 1,200 people signed up for the Huddersfield events. That’s a great start!”

The first race takes place on June 21 at 4pm, the second on June 22 at 10.30am and the third at 2.30pm.

The three races last year attracted a full house of 6,000 runners and raised tens of thousands of pounds.

Race for Life is the UK’s largest women-only fund-raising event, where women of all ages come together and walk, jog, or run 5k to raise money to help Cancer Research UK beat cancer.

Many women who take part in Race for Life do so for a personal reason; some women are cancer survivors while others take part in memory of or to celebrate the lives of loved ones affected by cancer.

Jenny said: “Last year’s events had an unforgettable atmosphere and we raised an incredible £300,000.

“This year, we are hoping that 6,000 women will sign up to take part in the Huddersfield events, helping us to raise a target of £344,000 this year.”

The Huddersfield participants will be part of a total of 750,000 women from across the UK, taking part at over 260 events.
