Comic Relief cash totalling £10,000 has been awarded to two good causes in Kirklees.

An organisation designing and manufacturing bespoke equipment for disabled people has landed a £6,000 grant.

Design & Manufacture for Disability, based at Brockholes, will use the cash to design a wheelchair bike for Streetbikes, a Dewsbury-based group promoting healthy living through cycling for hard-to-reach groups, the young and vulnerable.

And a grant of £4,000 has gone to the Borough of Kirklees Special Needs Swimming Squad to help with the cost of providing coaching and training for their team.

The squad is extremely successful and has won many competitions in the UK, and competed in the Special Olympics national games in Bath, where they won many medals.

The money was presented on behalf of Comic Relief by One Community, the community foundation for Kirklees.

Since its launch in 2010, One Community has raised almost £750,000 to provide funding for local charities and not-for-profit groups.

One Community, which has office space at Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors in Huddersfield, was appointed a delivery partner for Comic Relief in May this year.

The £10,000 awards are part of £4.5m being made available by Comic Relief to projects UK-wide which address issues of economic and social deprivation, through the Local Communities programme.

The next round of funding under the Local Communities programme will open in January, 2014 and applications are invited.

Projects should aim to bring lasting change for local people in their communities. They should be run by people directly affected by the issues they are dealing with and priority will be given to small, locally-based groups or organisations in areas of disadvantage that have a clear understanding of the needs of their community.

A Local Communities grant must be at least 30% of the total cost of the project.

Application forms and further details are available from the www.one-community.org.uk , or by calling 01484 468397.
