A skate park has been destroyed after an early-hours blaze.

Firefighters were called to the skateboard park in Wellholme Park in the early hours on Sunday after an on-patrol police woman spotted the flames.

Fire crews were called out at 2.30am and spent some time at the park, which is used by many local youngsters.

Only the metal frame remains of the main skate park ramp, with the plastic sheeting destroyed.

Brighouse fire station crew commander Tony Rostron said: “The ramps are about a quarter plastic and the flames were 10ft high when we got there.

“A police woman on patrol spotted it and called us, but the plastic top layer had already burnt off.

“It’s totally unusable now, with just a metal frame left.”

Firefighters were able to put the flames out within 30 minutes, but the ramps are out of bounds and the surrounding ground and grassland were badly charred by the flames.

Brighouse’s skate park was the first in the borough and is well used, with regular competitions taking place there.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact police on 101.
