A dozen sheep were killed by a lightning strike in Calderdale just minutes after the farmer had been feeding them.

Brian Lund, 62, farms on land high above Hebden Bridge at Walshaw and described Saturday night’s storms as the worst he had seen.

He said: “I was out feeding my sheep and looking round my stock and  the lightning struck.”

After feeding sheep in a field he went into a barn in the next field where he heard a big bang.

“The flash and bang were instant,” he said. “I could see the lightning in the field.”

He found the dead sheep where he had been five minutes earlier.
