FIFTEEN children are at risk of sexual exploitation in Calderdale.

Between January 2006 to December 2010 more than 130 children and young people were referred to the Calderdale Safeguarding Children Board. Some were as young as 11-years-old.

A report, to be presented to councillors today, shows that the victim numbers per year fluctuate from 62 in 2006 to 31 in 2009.

Currently there are 15 young people, mainly girls, on the at risk list.

The report says they have mainly been groomed and they do not recognise the signs of abuse.

Councillors will today consider a report into policies and practices to safeguard them.

A council spokesman said: “Locally, we have a multi-agency team overseen by Calderdale’s Safeguarding Children Board which has further enhanced the arrangements for the protection of this vulnerable group of children.”
