A new diary to encourage children to read has been launched by Huddersfield Town.

The free HTAFC Home and School Reading Diary will be given to 15,000 Kirklees schools pupils at the beginning of the Summer term.

The diary has been produced by the Huddersfield Town Foundation, the charity arm of the club which helps children from hard-hit families.

The illustrated booklet, designed by One17 Design, of Armitage Bridge, contains useful information, games, profiles of Town staff, players and local businesses including, this time, the Examiner.

The diary, printed for free by Igloo Books, also contains spaces for children to write about books they have read.

The Town diary was first launched last year. Some 5,000 copies were printed for last year’s autumn and winter term.

But due to positive feedback from schools, pupils and parents, the summer diary will run to 15,000 copies.

With cartoon illustrations of former Town striker and club ambassador Andy Booth, Huddersfield Town Foundation hopes Town’s local popularity will encourage more children to drop their games console controllers and pick up books.

Town Foundation fundraising officer Mandy Taylor said: “We wanted to make reading cool.

“Sadly in this day and age we have found that young children and parents are using Kindles and iPads while books are seldom seen in the home.

“We want to encourage children to take these diaries home and read together with their parents. We hope the cartoon characters will make them attractive. So far, the feedback has been fantastic.”

Founded by Town chairman Dean Hoyle, Huddersfield Town Foundation runs breakfast clubs and champions children’s literacy with a view to giving children and young people the best start in life.
