MOTORIST Richard Harvey got more than he expected on a visit to Castle Hill.

He chose the spot as the perfect place to take a few photos.

But on the way back down from the Almondbury landmark he almost ran over a rabbit.

It was the start of an interlude which left him with a few passengers in the back of his van - namely, 15 dumped pet rabbits and two guinea pigs.

They were rounded up from roadside bushes by Mr Harvey, with the help of another driver who stopped behind him.

Information is wanted on who might have abandoned the animals.

RSPCA officials - who described the animals as very tame - said no container had been found.

Mr Harvey said: "I was driving the van back down from Castle Hill when I almost ran over a white rabbit and had to swerve.

"I pulled over and got out to try and get it when it ran under the van.

"Another guy following me stopped to help. Then we realised there were more in the bushes.

"They didn't exactly want to be caught - and we've got the scratches from the brambles to prove it!

"But they were obviously used to being handled when we finally did get them and we put them in the back of the van until the RSPCA arrived."

The animal charity is now caring for the rabbits and guinea pigs at its shelter in Halifax.

RSPCA inspector John Atkinson said: "We want anybody who knows anything about this to contact us.

"They are generally in good condition and so tame that they wouldn't have lasted long as they don't have any experience of life in the wild.

"If nobody comes forward, we'll be looking to re-home them."
