Objections to a housing plan for Quarmby Fields have topped 175.

Plans for 22 new homes for the greenfield site off Hollyfield Avenue in Quarmby have been submitted by New Mill couple J & M Salvini.

It would see development in the Quarmby Fields Conservation area which is bounded by other houses and open land.

The application is expected to be decided by the Kirklees Strategic Planning Committee at its meeting in late July.

Clr Cahal Burke, Lindley Lib Dem, said: “Lindley ward has had the highest proportion of housing development for the whole of Kirklees between 2007 and 2013.

“We’ve lost a number of high profile greenfield sites and risk losing more.”

He criticised the Labour and Conservative parties for the “mess” caused by not having a Local Plan, which may offer protection against development of such sites.

Clr Burke added: “This has left us in a terrible position, unable to stop developers from going against local people’s views.

“If the council cannot protect a conservation area from development I am at a loss and I am certain local people will be as well. I have spoken to many residents living around the site and had a fantastic response to the letter I sent but want more people to get involved.

“Objections must be based on what they call “material planning concerns”. These include things like impact on roads, services, biodiversity, wildlife, the history of the site and the visual appearance of the area.”

The land is labelled Provisional Open Land (POL) on the 1999 Unitary Development Plan (UDP) which is now out of date. As a result of an up-to-date local plan POL sites are now being considered.
